5.4-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Eastern Papua New Guinea

Doha: An earthquake measuring 5.4 magnitude on the Richter scale struck eastern Papua New Guinea Monday.

According to Qatar News Agency, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said in a statement that the epicenter of the earthquake was located 94 km southeast of Panguna town, at a depth of 10 km.

No reports of human losses or material damage due to the earthquake so far.

Papua New Guinea is located on the so-called Ring of Fire, a region that extends along the coast of the Pacific Ocean and is characterized by high earthquake and volcanic activity. This region includes 90 percent of the world's active volcanoes.
