250 Tons of Frozen Meat with Tampered Expiry Dates Seized

MME, represented by the Central Inspection Team of the Assistant Undersecretary for Municipalities Affairs Office, and in cooperation with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (The Consumer Protection and Combating Commercial Fraud Department), has seized 250 tons of frozen meat with tampered expiry dates.

The members of the Inspection Team received information indicating that one of the meat factories in the industrial city is extending the expiry dates of the frozen meat for the benefit of a meat trading company. Upon verifying the information and identifying the name and location of the factory and the company, an inspection campaign was launched covering the factory to seize samples of the meat products referred to in the complaint. The team found that the factory operated in the following sequences: took the meat off seal, removed the expiry date of meat products that are about to be expired in few days, repacked the meat products and extended the expiry date for a further year, and finally storing them in one of the logistic storages within the State.

Dr. Nawal Mohammed Abdullah, Head of the Central Inspection Team of the Assistant Undersecretary for Municipalities Affairs Office, stated that seizure reports were drawn up in this regard, the meat products were in the custody of the team till being destroyed, and the Ministry of Interior (MOI) Officials were being notified of the incident to refer the violation to the investigation authorities.

Furthermore, MME assured its keenness to preserve the health of citizens and residents, confirming that it will not tolerate any kind of food violations, whether by fraud, promoting expired foods or other means of violations. In the same context, the Ministry provides support to the food facilities of various types, to help its management to scale up the services offered to consumers. This support is represented in recommendations, advice and guidance on the applicable health and sanitation requirements.
