Algiers: At least 11 people were killed and 19 others injured in a fire at an orphanage near the Algerian capital on Thursday, the country's Civil Protection authority said.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Authority stated in a Facebook post on Thursday that 19 people were treated and transported to hospital. Among the injured, 10 sustained burns of varying severity, two suffered from breathing difficulties, and seven were treated for psychological shock.

Additionally, rescue teams evacuated five people with disabilities to a safe location. Firefighting and search operations are still ongoing, with the final casualty toll and official findings on the cause of the fire yet to be announced.
