Qatar to Host WHO’s Regional Committee for Eastern Mediterranean Next Year

The WHO’s Regional Committee for Eastern Mediterranean decided to hold its 71st session in the State of Qatar from Oct. 14-17, 2024.

This is the first time that the State of Qatar hosts the meetings of the Regional Committee.

The selection of Qatar to host the next session came at the conclusion of the 70th session of the Regional Committee, held in Cairo from Oct. 9-12 with the participation of the State of Qatar.

HE Minister of Public Health Dr. Hanan Mohammed Al Kuwari chaired the State of Qatar’s Delegation to the session.

The 70th session of the Regional Committee meetings discussed several important topics, most notably the final report on progress, achievements, and challenges in implementing Qatar National Vision 2023, and a number of progress reports, the most important of which are polio eradication and transition.

The Regional Subcommittee on Polio Eradication also discussed ways to strengthen international cooperation to eradicate Polio.

mmittee Dr. Hanan Mohammed Al Kuwari stressed the importance of unifying efforts and strengthening international cooperation to eradicate polio, calling on all member states to do everything in their power to achieve this goal.

The meetings of the Regional Committee also reviewed a progress report on the implementation of the regional strategy for integrated disease surveillance, and a special update on emergencies affecting several countries of the Eastern Mediterranean Region, as well as efforts for building resilient health systems to promote universal health coverage.

The meetings also reviewed a number of important technical papers, including enhancing public health preparedness for mass human gatherings in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, in addition to governance and technical issues, and a number of important health topic.

The Regional Committee makes decisions in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region. The Regional Committee meets every year in October and is attended by ministerial delegations fro
m all countries of the Eastern Mediterranean Region. During sessions of the Regional Commission, its members discuss and approve regional financial policies, activities, and plans.
