Chairman of the Lower House Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee, Khaldoun Heena, said Sunday Jordan has received waves of refugees over the past decades, the latest of which was from Syria, placing pressure on the Kingdom's infrastructure, and adversely impacting the national economy. Speaking during a meeting with Panamanian Ambassador Jose Ulises Lescure, Heena urged the international community to shoulder its responsibility towards Jordan to carry out its humanitarian tasks towards the refugees. The MP also stressed the importance of the Hashemite Custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem. The envoy lauded the parliamentary committee's role in enhancing diplomatic ties with nations, noting its contribution in signing agreements and memoranda of understanding between Jordan and Panama and the opening of the Panamanian embassy in Jordan in 2018. Lescure also said panama had received refugees from Lebanon, Syria and Palestine, and called for strengthening bilateral relations in trade and other fields, which he said were below the two countries' ambitions. The envoy referred to Jordan's pharmaceutical industry and said Panama is known for its marine products and textiles, adding that the Panamanian parliament will set up a parliamentary group before October to explore cooperation prospects with Jordan.
