The international support for countries hosting refugees has seriously declined, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi affirmed on Thursday. In press statements ahead of commencing the seventh Brussels Conference on “Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region,” Safadi urged the international community to fully assume its responsibilities towards the refugees, saying ” it is no longer possible to deal with the same old mechanism for resolving the Syrian crisis.” Jordan hosts the largest proportion of refugees globally, based on the citizens’ overall number, he said, indicating that about 1.3 million Syrians live in the Kingdom, receiving various services. In addition, the official proposed establishing a special fund to provide a safe environment for the return of refugees. Furthermore, he highlighted that some international organizations such as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the World Food Programme (WFP) have reduced their services in Jordan, noting that WFP will stop providing aid to hundreds of thousands of refugees in September. Around 200,000 Syrians were born in Jordan since the beginning of the Syrian crisis, and more than 155,000 Syrian students enrolled in the Kingdom’s schools, adding that 50 percent of the Syrians in Jordan are below the age of 15.
