Addressing the symposium, Qatari author Sheikha Al Ziyara said that Young adult fiction (YA), which emerged in the beginning of the 20th century, became public in the State of Qatar in second decade of the new millennium. She added that the most prominent Qatari YA writers are Shamma Al Kuwari, Issa Abdullah, the author of the first trilogy in the history of Qatar, and Faisal Al Ansari, winner of the Katara Prize for Arabic Novel's YA category. Highlighting the challenges facing YA writers, Al Ziyara said that their production takes years to be hindered by the publishers' taboos as well as the publishing committees' lack of direct communication with young people, which makes it difficult to develop their beliefs about their characteristics and needs. She added that publishers resort to translated texts that are not compatible with the Arab identity, triggering readers to reject these translations, calling for the necessity of partnership between writers and publishers. Pinpointing the difference between YA and 'adult fiction', Al Ziyara highlighted that YA protagonists center around the dreams and psyche of the 12-18 age bracket and their issues of concern such as friendship, daydreams, equality and justice.
