Worldآ’s top body marks UN Womenآ’s Day

NEW YORK, March 9 (KUNA) — The Worldآ’s top body chose the 2016 theme for International Womenآ’s Day as Planet 50-50 by 2030 “Step It Up for Gender Equality”, with a focus on mobilizing momentum for the recently adopted 2030 Agenda by world leaders and heads of state that gathered for a great cause.
UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka stressed in her message marking this occasion that with unprecedented expressions of political will, the countdown to substantive gender equality by 2030 must begin, accompanied and underpinned by monitoring of accountability and evaluation of progress.
“We draw strength from this solidarity as we face world events such as severe population displacement, extreme violence against women and girls, and extensive instability and crises in many regions, she added.
Mlambo-Ngcukva affirmed that both women and girls, are critical to finding sustainable solutions to the challenges of poverty, inequality and the recovery of the communities hardest hit by conflicts, disasters and displacements. On International Womenآ’s Day, she reiterated the greater participation of women as one of the necessary conditions for an inclusive Agenda 2030, Their leadership, she said, is “insufficiently recognized but must emerge with greater participation in decision-making bodies, She called every women to ensure decisive, visible and measurable actions are taken under the banner “Planet 50-50” Step It Up for Gender Equality.
Away from the headquarters, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said gender inequality can only be addressed by empowering women as agents of change. The idea of this years theme Planet 50-50 by 2030 “Step It Up for For Gender Equality” is to consider how to accelerate the adopted 2030 Agenda, building momentum for the effective implementation of the new Sustainable Development Goals, especially the fifth goal which stresses on achieving gender equality and empower all women and girls.
Film stars, UN officials and New York City came together today to commemorate the day by launching the inaugural HeForShe Arts week, a new initiative from UN Women geared towards leveraging the arts for gender equality.
