US presidential envoy vows greater aid for Iraq

BAGHDAD, March 3 (KUNA) — A US military official vowed here on Thursday to provide the Iraqi government with greater economic and military support.
An official statement by the Iraqi Government said the pledge was made by Brett McGurk, the Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter the so-called Islamic State (IS), during a meeting with Prime Minister Haidar Al-Abadi.
The United States fully backs Iraq in its war against terrorism, said the leading US military official, who also praised “security gains” recently made by the Iraqi Army.
He was alluding to significant advance of the regular forces in their ongoing wide-scale onslaught against the IS strongholds on Iraqi territories.
The US presidential envoy also vowed to help the nation cope with its financial crisis, through raising external aid, providing the country with expertise and backing for development ventures.
McGurk arrived in Iraq on Wednesday for talks with local leaders on the warfare against the IS. (end) ah.rk
