US Defence Secretary Mattis Phones German Counterpart Von der Leyen

Washington, US Secretary of Defence Jim Mattis spoke by telephone Thursday with German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen to introduce himself and exchange views on “defence security issues,” the Pentagon said in a statement.

Mattis also assured von der Leyen of the United States’ “enduring commitment” to NATO, despite US President Donald Trump’s repeated criticisms of the alliance, the statement said.

Mattis thanked von der Leyen for Germany’s leadership in NATO activities in the Baltic and in Afghanistan, and acknowledged the role that Germany plays in fighting terrorism, specifically in the counter-Islamic State coalition, according to the statement.

Germany is host to 35,000 US personnel, the largest US military presence in Europe.
