US contributes USD 20 million in refugee aid

WASHINGTON, March 28 (KUNA) — The Obama Administration announced Monday that it is contributing USD 20 million to multiple UN agencies in an effort to aid refugees arriving on European shores.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and the International Federation of Red Cross/Red Crescent (IFRC) will be receiving the funds “to respond to increased protection, shelter, and other lifesaving assistance throughout Europe, including in Greece, Western Turkey, and the Balkans,” the State Department said.
The US has provided USD 24 million for the refugee crisis over the past year, bringing the new total to USD 44 million, the statement revealed. (end) ys.nfm
