US airstrike targets senior Al-Shabaab leader in Somalia

WASHINGTON, June 1 (KUNA) — A US airstrike in south-central Somalia carried out on May 27 targeted senior Al-Shabaab military commander, Abdullahi Haji Da’ud, the Pentagon revealed Wednesday. Da’ud was one of the group’s “most senior military planners” and served as a “principal coordinator” to its attacks in Somalia, Kenya, and Uganda, said Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook in a statement.
“Da’ud has been responsible for the loss of many innocent lives through attacks he has planned and carried out,” said Cook. He noted that the US is “confident” that his removal from Al-Shabaab will “disrupt near-term attack planning, potentially saving many innocent lives.” The US is currently assessing the results of this airstrike and will provide an update once a final conclusion is made.
