UNHCR Names Syrian Swimmer Yusra Mardini As Goodwill Ambassador

Geneva- Syrian swimmer Yusra Mardini, who competed at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio as part of a refugee team, was on Thursday named a goodwill ambassador by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

“Yusra is a deeply inspiring young woman,” the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, said in a statement. “Through her powerful personal story, Yusra represents the hopes, the fears and the incredible potential of the more than ten million young refugees around the globe.” Mardini, now 19 and settled in Berlin, fled war-torn Syria on a boat which she and her sister ended up pushing to safety as it began to sink.

“I am thrilled to join the UNHCR family and eager to continue spreading the message that refugees are just normal people living through traumatic and devastating circumstances, who are capable of extraordinary things if only given a chance,” Mardini said.
