UK exit will affect Asian economy: Singapore PM

KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 (KUNA) — Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said the UK exit from EU is “a turning point” for the world and will have an impact on Asia’s economy as well.
The exit decision represents the British concern over the growing immigration crisis in Europe and the country’s desire to take independent decisions without referring to the EU’s laws, he noted in a statement on Friday.
“The desire to disengage, to be less constrained by oneآ’s partners, to be free to do things entirely as one chooses, is entirely understandable. And yet in reality for many countries disengaging and turning inwards will likely lead to less security, less prosperity, and a dimmer future,” said Lee.
He added that his country must watch the developments “carefully”, adding that Singapore will continue to boost relations with the UK as a long-time partner.(end)
