UK exit huge loss for Europe – Austrian Chancellor

VIENNA, June 24 (KUNA) — Austria’s Chancellor Christian Kern said the UK’s decision to leave the EU is a “bad day” for all of Europe, warning that the continent would lose its international position and role.
The economic impact will be “felt for some time” and the negative developments on EU must be “kept as small as possible,” said Kern in a statement released by his office on Friday.
Meanwhile, Kern, also leader of Austria’s Social Democratic (SPO) party, said he wasn’t worried about a domino effect, adding that no similar referendum will follow in Austria.
On his part, Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz told Austria’s radio he was deeply surprised by the UK’s exit decision.”Not a stone is left standing, that is a political earthquake,” added.
Kurz expressed his concern over the domino effect with other EU countries who will also consider exiting. He noted that there must be “much change and the speed has to be quick.”(end)
