WAM GENEVA, 18th September, 2013 (WAM) — Ambassador Obaid Salem Al Zaabi, Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations, has accentuated the importance of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s remarks on the need of the international community to approve new strategies and actions to eradicate contemporary forms of slavery.

His comments came during his participation in the interactive debate on the report of Gulnara Shahinian, Special Rapporteur, on contemporary forms of slavery at the 24th session of the Human Rights Council currently being held in Geneva, where he firmly reiterated the UAE’s policies in the fight against this dangerous phenomenon.

Ambassador Obaid added that at the international level, the UAE has joined many of the basic international conventions of the International Labour Organisation, in addition to providing regular financial support to the United Nations Voluntary Trust Fund on Contemporary Forms of Slavery since 2008.

He expressed his hopes that the recommendations made by the Special Rapporteur on contemporary slavery will contribute to finding a political will to ensure comprehensive coordination between the world’s countries to detect various cases of contemporary slavery and put an end to this dangerous phenomenon which threatens every community.
