Tsunami Risk Centred on Solomon Islands after Magnitude-7.8 Quake

Washington, – The risk of large waves is confined to the Solomon Islands after a magnitude-7.8 earthquake struck the Pacific archipelago, the International Tsunami Information Center said.

Tsunami waves reaching 1 to 3 metres above the tide level are possible in the Solomons, with waves up to 1 metre possible for some coasts of Papua New Guinea, dpa cited the centre warns.

French Polynesia could see waves of less than 30 centimetres, and all other Pacific coasts should only see waves “much less” than that level, the centre said.
