21st Aspendos Opera and Ballet Festival to open with ‘Aida’Giuseppe Verdiandrsquos grand opera andldquoAidaandrdquo will once again grace Antalyaandrsquos ancient Aspendos Roman theater when the Izmir State Opera and Ballet stages its production of the opera in four acts later this month on the night of Aug. 30 as the opening piece of this yearandrsquos Aspendos International Opera and Ballet Festival.

The festival, organized annually by the Ankara-based Directorate General of State Opera and Ballet, will mark its 21st edition with eight performances to be staged from Aug. 30 through Sept.

24, 1871 in Cairo, is also a fixture of the Aspendos festivalandrsquos program, where it is either the opening piece or the biggest highlight and is performed by various opera companies, from Turkey and abroad, every year The festivalandrsquos historic venue, built during the 2nd century, provides an excellent backdrop for the opera, which is set in ancient Egypt.The Budapest Operetta and Musical Theatre from Hungary, which will present a gala concert of operettas on Sept.

6, and an Italian company, the Taormina Festival Opera from Sicily, who will perform the Puccini opera andldquoToscaandrdquo on Sept. 20, are the two visiting groups on this yearandrsquos lineup, the directorate-general said in a press release on Aug.
