SRSG Kubis denounces “abhorrent” bombing at football stadium in Iraq

(With SEC-IRAQ-EXPLOSION) BAGHDAD, March 25 (KUNA) – The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq strongly condemned the deadly terrorist bombing that targeted spectators at a football stadium in the town of Iskanderiyah, Babylon governorate. “The evildoers are aiming their wrath at the innocent and vulnerable civilians,” Jan Kubis said in a press release on Friday. “Today, Daesh committed yet another atrocity, targeting families who were enjoying their weekend attending a football game in their hometown. This abhorrent act deserves the strongest condemnation,” he added. The SRSG expresses his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims as well as to the Government and people of Iraq, and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured, according to the statement.
Kubis reiterates his call on Iraqis to unite to thwart the terrorists’ goals of inciting sectarian tensions in the country. He calls on the Government of Iraq to make sure that the perpetrators of these crimes and those behind them are swiftly brought to justice.
The bomb attack has reportedly killed 26 people and injured 60 others. (end)
