Skhirat agreement only way out for Libya – UN envoy

TUNIS, Jan 27 (KUNA) — The UN-brokered political agreement concluded in Skhirat, Morocco, is the only choice for resolving the Libyan crisis, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Martin Kobler said on Wednesday.
Kobler urged the Libyan stakeholders to work for restoring stability in the North African country.
There is no alternative to the Sakhirat agreement, which is the only choice in Libya, the UN official told a press conference at the UNSMIL premises in Tunisia. He stressed the fact that all parties have to respect the institutions to be produced by the agreement.
In the meantime, Kobler called on the international organizations, especially the African Union (AU), to play a bigger role for ending the crisis in Libya, which is an Arab and African state at the same time. They all have to assist the international community to push Libya toward peace and stability amid the perils threatening the country.
At the time when the Libyan powers are discussing the Sakhirat agreement, the so-called Islamic State (IS) expands in the country, seizing more territories, Kobler said.
He stressed that the UN does not interfere in Libya’s internal affairs. The process has to be undertaken by a Libyan leadership, to be assisted by the UN, he said, warning against further deterioration of the Libyan economy.
Over the period 2011/2015, the country’s financial resources sharply fell from USD 280 billion to USD 60 billion, according to the Central Bank of Libya, Kobler noted.
In case no politicians do not agree on a solution, the figure will drop to zero, he warned. (end) ksj.msa
