Sharjah Ruler visits Portuguese universities

WAM LISBON, 4th October 2013 (WAM)– H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, yesterday (Thursday) visited the New University of Lisbon (UNL – Universidade NOVA de Lisboa) and the Classical University of Lisbon (ULisboa).

H.H Sheikh Sultan visits are aimed at supporting academic cooperation and student and faculty exchange between Portuguese universities and the Sharjah-based universities.

Upon arrival at the New University of Lisbon, H.H Sheikh Sultan was welcomed by the Portuguese Secretary of State of Higher Education, Jose Ferreira Gomes, the rector of the university, Antonio Rendas, deans of colleges and members of the faculty.

At the meeting held later, H.H Sheikh Sultan was briefed on the university which was founded in 1973 and now has more than 19,000 enrolled female and male students.

At the conclusion of his visit, H.H Sheikh Sultan was presented with a memento by the rector of the New University of Lisbon.

Later, H.H Sheikh Sultan, accompanied by the Portuguese Secretary of State of Higher Education, Jose Ferreira Gomes, visited the University of Lisbon (ULisboa), one of the largest public universities in the European country.

The current University of Lisbon is the result of the merger of two former public universities of Lisbon, the former University of Lisbon (1911-2013), founded in 1911, and the Technical University of Lisbon, founded in 1930.

H.H the Ruler of Sharjah is accompanied, during his visit to Portugal, by the UAE Ambassador to Portugal, Saqr Nasser Al Raissi, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Information of Sharjah, Abdullah Mohamemd Al Owais, Advisor to H.H the Ruler of Sharjah for Higher Education, Dr. Amr Abdul Hameed, Mohammed Obaid Al Za’abi, Head of the Protocol and Hospitality Department of Sharjah, Head of the Dr. Sultan Al Qasimi Centre of Gulf Studies, Ali Ibrahim Al Marri, the UAE Consul-General of the UAE in Lisbon, Saleh Al Dheeb, and other officials.

H.H Sheikh Sultan thanked the officials of the two universities and the Portuguese higher education officials for the warm welcome and hospitality.

He said that the meetings actively contribute to the development of academic cooperation programs between the two sides.

He also gave his blessings to the cooperation project between the universities of Sharjah and a number of Portuguese universities. In June this year, a delegation of senior officials of Portuguese universities visited the University City in Sharjah to have a first-hand experience of the emirate’s academic and research institutions.

H.H the ruler of Sharjah also affirmed his support to the Institute for Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Lisbon, which is the only such institute in Portugal.
