DUBAI, March 17 (KUNA) — Sharjah Ruler Sheikh Dr. Sultan Al-Qassemi opened the 26th edition of the Sharjah Theater Days Festival on Thursday with honoring Kuwaiti Theater Troupe.
The troupe’s ‘Sada El-Samt’ (echo of silence) play was proclaimed in mid-January as winner of Sheikh Dr. Sultan Al-Qassemi’s fifth theatrical prize for 2015.
Sheikh Dr. Sultan presented his award to the Troupe’s Board Chairman Ahmad Al-Salman in the presence of Kuwait Consul General in Dubai and the northern emirates Thiyab Farhan Al-Rashidi and several staffers of the Consulate, as well as dozens of celebrities from across the Arab world.
Speaking to KUNA after receiving the award, Al-Salman expressed joy and gratitude to Sheikh Dr. Sultan Al-Qassemi for the honoring.
He lauded as praiseworthy the troupe members for the elaborate performance of the play which won several Arab awards.
“The play tells about the Arab people’s anguish of dispossession and exile as a result of armed conflicts,” he pointed out.
Al-Salman highlighted the significance of Sharjah Theater Days Festival in promoting the theatrical movement in the Gulf and Arab countries, and igniting the creativity of artists, playwrights and men of letters.
Consul General Al-Rashidi said, in a statement to KUNA, that the honoring of Sada El-Samt signals the progress of the theatrical movement and the quality of the literary works in Kuwait.
He congratulated the troupe on the award, and extolled Sheikh Dr. Sultan Al-Qassemi – also member of the UAE Federal Supreme Council – for his role in founding the Arab Theatre Institute (ATI) in 2009 and promoting the Arab theatrical arts.
“Sharjah Theater Days Festival has become an important juncture in the bringing to the limelight the creative artists and literary people,” he said.
The honorees at the event also included the Qatari artist Ghanim Al-Sleiti and the UAE artist Omar Ghabbash.
Starring Al-Ameeri, Samah and Abdullah Al-Turkmani, Sada El-Samt is written by late Iraqi playwright Qassem Matroud and directed by Faisal Al-Ameeri, of Kuwait. (end) smr.gb
