SEMINAR ON THE QATARI NOVEL AND THE EXPERIMENTAL NARRATIVE READING OF ‘SMEDRA’ A NOVEL BY DR. ABDUL RAHMAN BIN SALEM AL-KUWARI

The cultural seminar was organized by the Culture & Arts Chapter in QU Alumni Association and a research team on Interdisciplinary Studies from the College of Arts and Sciences, in collaboration with the Qatari Forum for Authors

The Culture & Arts Chapter in Qatar University (QU) Alumni Association and a research team on Interdisciplinary Studies from the College of Arts and Sciences, organized a cultural seminar, in collaboration with the Qatari Forum for Authors on The Qatari novel and the Experimental Narrative: Reading of ‘Smedra’ a novel by Dr. Abdul Rahman bin Salem Al-Kuwari, a Qatari novelist and the former Minister of Health.

The critical reading was presented by Dr. Abdelhak Belabed, Associate Professor at Qatar University and a member of the Qatari Forum for Authors and Dr. Abdulmunim Mjawer, writer and critic; and was chaired by Kholeh Mortazawi, President of the Culture and Arts Chapter. Dr. Abdul Rahman bin Salem Al-Kuwari attended the event as a guest of honor, in addition to Director-General of the Qatari Forum for Authors Dr. Aisha Al Kuwari and Saleh Ghareeb, Director of Programs at the Forum, as well as a number of professors and students from QU and interested and relevant individuals and writers.

Amna Abdulkarim, Vice President of Culture & Arts Chapter – QU Alumni Association noted that the seminar aims to present new ideas related to the novel, and the issues within the novel as well as showing how constructive criticism can contribute to the improvement of the narrative writing of the Qatari novel in general.

Dr. Abdelhak Belabed also commented noting that the experimental narrative structure is a new direction for Qatari novels, as of the last decade, where important local issues are discussed for the global audience, such as history, heritage, women’s issues and cultural diversity.
