Russia reports largest single-day death toll from coronavirus

Moscow, Russia reported 174 deaths from the novel coronavirus over the past 24 hours on Tuesday, the country’s highest single-day death toll from the virus, said dpa international.

Russia has recorded more than 360,000 cases of the virus on its territory, with about 3,800 deaths directly linked to the disease, a mortality rate just above 1 per cent, according to a federal monitoring service.

More than 100 medical personnel in Russia have died from causes directly linked to the novel coronavirus, the Russian news agency Interfax reported on Tuesday, citing the Health Ministry.

The Health Ministry has been collecting such information from regional officials throughout the country, the report said.

“On Friday, there were 101 people confirmed on the list,” Health Ministry official Lyudmila Letnikova was quoted as saying.

An online list of health workers believed to have succumbed to the virus currently contains about 300 names, the report said.

Russian officials have been noting a declining infection rate in recent weeks, with regions throughout the country preparing to lift quarantine measures that have devastated the economy.

At the same time that it reported the most virus-linked deaths in a single day, the federal monitoring service also reported record-high recoveries.

“Russia has reported 12,331 new coronavirus recoveries, the highest daily number so far,” Russian state news agency TASS reported, citing the monitoring service.

The country has had the world’s third-largest coronavirus caseload behind that of the United States and Brazil, according to comparative data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
