Rio 2016: Qatar to Face Germany Wednesday in Handball Quarterfinals

Rio de Janeiro, – Qatar’s national handball team have booked a date on Wednesday with Germany in the quarterfinals of Rio de Janeiro Olympics after beating Argentina 22-18 in the final game of the group stage.

The win took the Maroon’s tally to five points in fourth place to qualify ahead of Argentina and Tunisia who both were eliminated from the competition. The victory was the second for the team after overcoming Croatia in the opening game. Qatar also drew with Tunisia and lost to France and Denmark.

In the other quarterfinal games, Croatia will take on Poland, Slovenia will face Denmark, while hosts Brazil will battle it out with world champions France.

Speaking after the win over Argentina, national team director Youssef Al Heel expressed his delight at the qualification, saying that he had hoped Egypt and Tunisia would continue in the competition because their exit added more pressure on Qatar since the elimination of the three Arab teams would have been a “disaster.” Al Heel said Germany are very similar in terms of style to France and Croatia, adding that the team have already started to think of the game right after the end of the Argentina match.
