QU MARKS WORLD TELEVISION DAY

Qatar University (QU) marked World Television Day on 21 November, to raise awareness among people the increasing impact of television on decision-making.

Television continues to be the single largest source of video consumption. Though screen sizes have changed, and people create, post, stream and consume content on different platforms, the number of households with television sets around the world continues to rise. The interaction between emerging and traditional forms of broadcast creates a great opportunity to raise awareness about the important issues facing our communities and our planet.

On the occasion Dr. Kamal Hamidou, Acting Department Head of Mass Communication, said “Recognizing the importance of keeping pace with the rapid professional and technological developments that occur in the labor market in the field of television. The Media Department is currently working on developing the study plans to keep pace with development of television work environment with keenness to actually achieve the goal of excellence within the strategic plan of QU 2018-2022. In this regard, the Mass communication Department has envisioned a new study plan, which is expected to start work in fall of 2022. Built-in an updated and integrated manner, introduced many modern courses such as podcasts, digital storytelling, data journalism, digital editing arts, and interactive digital photography and montage.”

Dr. Kamal adds “The new vision focuses on enabling the graduate to acquire applied skills that will enable the students to enter the labor market with sufficient skills on the one hand and enabling them to benefit from it for practical life, and on second hand launching self-financing professional projects in the field of media.”

Dr. Fuad Mohamed, Lecturer of Mass Communication commented on Television critics claim. He said, “Television critics claim that television takes away so much of our time that we lack time for other activities such as family conversations, reading, exercise, etc. However, television really contributes to our education and knowledge. Documentaries and media programs give us insight into nature, our societies, and our political events. During election seasons, debates, speeches, and campaign news for candidates are broadcast almost every day, and television presents their views and ideas. It is true that we can watch all of this on the Internet without any time constraints. This is not to diminish the importance of television, but rather to enhance it.”

“What would you do if you heard that there was a bomb explosion in a nearby city? You can turn on your TV to get more information. This is because the live nature of television allows visual information to be transmitted in a way that brings you closer to it,” Dr. Fuad adds.

World Television Day is not so much a celebration of the tool, but rather the philosophy which it represents. Television represents a symbol for communication and globalization in the contemporary world.
