Qatar University College of Engineering (QU-CENG), Hamad bin Khalifa University (HBKU), Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI), and HUAWEI announced the names of winners of the Artificial Intelligence National Competition.
In his speech, QU-CENG Dean Dr. Khalid Kamal Naji said, “Qatar’s 2022 Artificial Intelligence Competition-MENA Region challenges students, developers, professionals, and researchers to develop and demonstrate how humans can collaborate with powerful Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies to tackle some challenges for different applications. This opportunity raises awareness of AI technologies in Qatar, supports building local capacity in this timely and crucial area, and provides a platform for participants to share AI ideas and applications”.
In his speech, Dr. Ahmed K. Elmagarmid, Executive Director of QCRI, said, ” The competition consists of two tracks, and participants are required to submit either track 1 “Concept & Design” or track 2 “Proof of Concept & Demo”. Also, the competition consists of 5 phases: idea submission, announcement of shortlisted ideas, project submission, project testing and demos, announcement of winners.”
Dr. Mounir Hamdi, Dean of the College of Science and Engineering at HBKU, said, “The competition recognizes the developers who are paving the path for future innovative AI technologies that can be deployed to support infrastructure and address challenges for different applications such as healthcare solutions, smart cities, Fintech, education, social media platforms, sports, crowd monitoring, detection and prevention of attacks and malware, and logistics impacting the supply chain, etc.”
Mr. Henry Ye, Vice President of Public Relations and Media for the Northern Gulf Region at Huawei, said: “We at Huawei are committed to developing the ICT industry by creating an open and collaborative ecosystem and investing in local youth talent to enable them to contribute effectively to the future of social and economic growth. There is no doubt that continuous innovation is the most important factor in rapid technological progress, and here comes the role of such competitions in raising awareness of modern technologies such as artificial intelligence and in supporting capacity development by providing an ideal platform for participants to present important ideas and applications to serve the goals of tomorrow.”
In his comment, Dr. Abdullah Khaled Al-Ali, Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at QU, said: “Artificial intelligence is considered one of the main pillars on which the technology industry is based in the current era, and it refers to the ability of machines and digital computers to perform specific and intelligent tasks that those computers were unable to devise. In traditional ways, such as the ability to think or learn and the ability to study patterns and deduce their outputs after the process of experiment training and analysis. Artificial intelligence also works to reach intelligent systems in various fields of our current era such as education, security, transportation, guidance in energy expenditure, navigation systems, and data analysis.”
Dr. Mohammed Al-Hitmi, Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering at QU, said: “Artificial intelligence contributes to enhancing and improving the education experience. Platforms based on artificial intelligence can also facilitate the process of distance education, especially with the challenges we faced due to the COVID-19 virus. Hence the importance of this competition by creating applications based on artificial intelligence that serves the community as a whole.”
