Held under the patronage and presence of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Hamad bin Suhaim Al-Thani, wife of His Highness the Emir, Qatar University (QU) organized yesterday morning the graduation ceremony of its 44th batch of distinguished female students at the QU Sports and Events Complex.

During the ceremony for distinguished female students, Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Hamad bin Suhaim Al-Thani honored 421 undergraduate and graduate students from the Class of 2021. This year 2819 female students graduate from a total of 3648 female and male students, who attended their respective graduation ceremonies over the course of a week. In consideration of the health and safety of the attendees, the University insured that safety and precautionary measures approved by the state were fully undertaken during the event.

In his speech on this occasion, President of QU Dr. Hassan Al-Derham said, “Today we celebrate the 44th batch of Qatar University graduates, which is represented by a new cohort of 2819 female graduates joining those who preceded them from the university graduates whose number exceeds 39,000 since the university’s founding. Those successive cohorts of university graduates have contributed a great deal, to what our beloved country Qatar, is witnessing from a comprehensive renaissance in the social, cultural, economic and other aspects of various fields. Today, we see the university professor in her lecture hall, the research in her lab, the teacher in her school, the doctor in her clinic, the engineer in her workplace and the banker in her bank, without forgetting her role as a women, a mother that nurtures generations.”

He adds, “Since its establishment in the year 1977 until the present time, Qatar University has had the most prominent role in leading the development and renaissance for the community, and Qatari women in particular. This positive transformation, achieved by Qatar University, in pushing women to play their role in achieving development is the result of the university’s vision and mission over the years, where the university sought to carry out this task across three axes. The first of these is the permanent development of the university’s academic programs to keep pace with the changes of the times and to respond to developmental needs as well as modernization, aimed at confirming the pioneering role of Qatari women in achieving development and renaissance. As for the second focus, the university was keen to attract, prepare and train many leading female academics and researchers who contribute to achieving the university’s mission and roles, and have even led these transformations in our Qatari society. The last and most extensive and influential point, is that which includes female students and graduates, the university worked on preparing them with the skills, values and attributes that qualify them to enter working life efficiently and effectively, through a unique student experience.”

“Qatar University is based on a message that contains a value system that elevates intellectual freedom and human dignity. Through this system the University works to build the Qatari person who is equipped with scientific knowledge, is proud of their identity and belongs to their religion, homeland and nation, and contributes to the enrichment of human civilization.”

Addressing Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Hamad bin Suhaim Al-Thani, Dr. Hassan said, “Qatar University has made many achievements: According to the QS ranking (Quacquarelli Symonds World University Ranking 2022), the University ranked 224 globally. The University also occupied second place in the Arab world according to the Times Higher Education rankings. This great achievement would not have been possible without the grace of Allah (SWT) and had it not been for the guidance and diligent follow-up of the University’s Board of Regents and the continued support of the government.”

He adds, “In the context of distinction and excellence, many colleges and programs at Qatar University have received academic accreditation from the most prestigious international bodies, which clearly confirms what the University offers in terms of science and knowledge, which is no less than that offered in the world’s finest international universities.”

“We have a firm conviction that the continuity of success is linked to the continued quest to provide what is best for our students and our society. Especially in light of the challenges at the local and global levels. The higher education landscape in Qatar has changed in recent years, which increased the spirit of competition to attract promising students between different educational institutions, and raised the ceiling of their expectations and requirements.”

“On the other hand, the results of the fourth industrial revolution, whose precursors we are witnessing, and the radical change it imposes on the demands of the labor market, oblige us in the education sector in general, and in higher education in particular, to constantly review our plans and redraw our policies. In this context, the University works to support its basic sectors: education, research, and student success, in order to provide a distinguished education that leads to a qualitative shift in the student’s study experience, by providing an integrated educational process, both inside and outside the classroom.”

Speaking to the Class of 2021 graduates, Dr. Hassan Al-Derham said, “My daughters, Qatar University is not just a passing stage in your journey that ends with the completion of your studies and your graduation. In fact, the University is your starting point and reference to which the graduate returns. The University, with its professors and all its sectors, spares no effort in serving you, in order to gain more knowledge. The pursuit of knowledge is a path we take and a goal we seek to reach.”

As a conclusion to his speech, Dr. Hassan paid homage to the parents of graduates for their support as well as the faculty who helped to build a generation of promising female leaders.

On behalf of the outstanding graduates, graduate Moza Al-Obaidan presented a speech, welcoming students and praising the university for what it has offered to generations of students. “On behalf of myself and the graduates of the Class of 2021, allow me to describe to you our position here and our feelings today. We stand here today, carrying in our minds the answers, in our hearts certainty and in our hands is the trust. Among us is the teacher who builds generations, the doctor who saves souls, the engineer who innovates for the human being, the accountant, the lawyer, the pharmacist, the researcher, the writer –and there is no shortcoming in those who are not mentioned. The women thrives in her workplace with persistence, and we are the good evidence of that.”

It is worth noting the host of the ceremony was Dr. Hanan Al-Fayadh, Professor in the College of Arts and Sciences who praised the University’s contribution to the community and urged the graduates to continue on the path of success.

As QU graduates its 44th cohort of graduates, the university continues to chronicle a long history spanning decades in which it contributes heavily to Qatar’s development and prosperity, through boosting the labor market with qualified graduates.

QU’s new strategy places an emphasis on elevating the student experience by placing QU as a pioneer and a leading educational institution in the higher education sector in Qatar and abroad. QU is committed to providing quality education in areas of national priority, moving towards building a knowledge-based society.

The ceremony included a video screening produced by Qatar University, where the public learned about the university’s vision and the most important achievements of its students.
