QRCS deploys 3 medical convoys to Sudan

Doha, Qatar: Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has launched three simultaneous medical convoys to Sudan. Over two weeks, specialized medical professionals were deployed from Doha to perform operations and medical examinations free of charge for poor patients in three Sudanese states, assisted by local medical professionals of the host hospitals.

The first medical convoy takes place in the River Nile State, covering general surgery and urology, while the Gezira State is hosting the second medical convoy for urology. The two convoys are implemented in cooperation with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), with a target of 700 medical examinations and 486 complex and critical surgeries.

The third medical convoy involves 120 cardiac surgeries and catheterizations for children at Aliaa Specialist Hospital, Omdurman, the Khartoum State, in cooperation with the Canadian International Foundation (CIF) and Sudan’s Ministry of Health (MOH).

The volunteering medical team from HMC comprised: Dr. Abdullah Al- Nuaimi (consultant urologist), Dr. Ahmed Hayati (consultant urologist), Dr. Tariq Ahmed (consultant urologist), Dr. Mohamed Jassim (resident urologist), Dr. Mariam Al-Sulaiti (consultant general surgeon), Dr. Siddique Mohieldin (consultant general surgeon), Dr. Haya Al-Kuwari (resident general surgeon), and Dr. Yasser Al-Tarifi (consultant anesthesiologist).

Apart from the surgeries, the activities of the medical convoys included the maintenance of operating theaters and donation of medical equipment and surgical tables for Atbara Teaching Hospital, the River Nile State.

At the Gezira Hospital for Renal Diseases and Surgery, Dr. Al-Nuaimi delivered a specialized lecture on “Substitution Urethroplasty for Bulbar Urethral Stricture”. Also, the hospital was provided with a urodynamic system, a machine rarely found in Sudan and available only in Khartoum.

Dr. Mohamed Salah Ibrahim, Director of Relief and International Development Division at QRCS, is visiting Sudan to meet Dr. Abdel- Moneim Bella, Director-General of MOH in the River Nile State, and Dr. Muawiya Sayed Ahmed, Director of Atbara Teaching Hospital.

Dr. Ibrahim visited the beneficiaries who underwent surgeries, took a tour of the hospital’s dialysis center and neonatal department, and met the Qatari medical team and local medical staff. He will meet Mohamed Al-Badawi Abdel-Magid, Governor of River Nile State.

Then, he will travel to Wad Madani, the Gezira State, to inspect the progress of the urology convoy. He will meet state officials to discuss opportunities to develop QRCS’s work there.
