QATAR UNIVERSITY CENTER FOR YOUNG SCIENTISTS CONCLUDES THE 20TH CYCLE OF THE “I AM A RESEARCHER” PROGRAM

Qatar University Young Scientists Center (QUYSC) concluded the 20th cycle of the “I am a researcher” program for the 12th consecutive years in an award ceremony held at Qatar University on Tuesday, May 24, 2022.

The number of participating projects in this cycle was seven from five secondary schools: Qatar Banking Studies and Business Administration for Boys, Jassim Bin Hamad Secondary School for Boys, Omar Bin Al Khattab Secondary School for Boys, Zubaida Secondary School for Girls, and Al-Arqam Academy for Girls. During the ceremony, the winners were announced

On May 19, 2022, the final competition was held virtually to evaluate the projects. During the evaluation day, the participating groups competed with enthusiasm to present their scientific research before a panel of judges from professors and researchers from Qatar University.

All groups presented all the scientific research steps that they had undertaken in addition to the results they reached in the form of presentations, and they showed film documenting their journey in the field of scientific research. Among the participating project is research titled “Energy-saving Membrane Distillation Hybrid Process for resource recovery and zero liquid discharge” through this research, the students manufactured a highly efficient polymeric membrane for use in treating polluted water from factories and recovering the minerals in it again and benefiting from them. The second research, entitled “The Impact of Electrodeposited Nanocomposite Coatings of Ni-P-BN for Steel Corrosion prevention” that aims to develop and characterize coatings of Ni-P-BN nanocomposites by electrodeposition technique to overcome the adverse effects of corrosion in industry, economy and the environment. One of the groups also worked on research entitled “Porous Copolymer Membranes for Industrial Wastewater Treatment.” This research focuses on manufacturing a nano-membrane made of (styrene – isoprene – styrene) and silica added to be used in oil-water separation applications. The membrane was practical, easy to manufacture, and low-cost production in addition to various scientific research that was presented during this evaluation day.

During the ceremony, the winning groups were honored by Prof. Mariam Al-Ali Al-Maadeed, Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies, Qatar University. The First place winners were Ahmad Al- Kuwari and Ahmad Heidous from “ Lusail Stadium” Group from Jassim Bin Hamad Secondary school for boys for the project entitled “Energy-saving Membrane Distillation Hybrid Process for resource recovery and zero liquid discharge.” The second place was won by Jawaher Al-Ansari and Noora Al-Bordainiof “Al-Thumama Stadium” group from Al-Arqam Academy for girls for research entitled “The Impact of Electrodeposited Nanocomposite Coatings of Ni-P-BN for Steel Corrosion prevention”.

At the end of the ceremony, Prof. Noora Al-Thani, Director of Qatar University’s Young Scientists Center, addressed the honored students, praising their achievements, creativity, and perseverance throughout the program. In her speech, she said, “Today, we are overwhelmed with pride and happiness for the achievements and success of the students of “I am a researcher program” in the field of scientific research, which is of great importance to society and the individual, as it opens up new horizons for them. The program also enables students to work directly with a group of experts and researchers at Qatar University, enhancing their practical capabilities, developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and preparing them for university life. The promising youth energies we witnessed today motivate us to continue our initiatives in scientific research and the participation of students in it as an essential element of scientific progress.”

Prof. Noora Al-Thani also thanked the efforts of the center’s partners: UNESCO – Doha Office and the Qatar National Committee for Education, Culture, and Science.
