QATAR STRESSES COMMITMENT FOR IMPLEMENTING INTERNATIONAL DRUG CONTROL TREATIES

VIENNA, Austria, Mar 16 – Qatar said that, its commitment to implement three international drug control treaties, in effective bilateral, regional and international cooperation, to deal with illicit drug trafficking, has

achieved impressive success at the national level.

This was stated in a speech delivered by Ali Khalfan Al Mansouri, Qatar’s Ambassador to Austria and Permanent Representative to International Organisations in Vienna, during the 59th session of the Commission on Narcotic

Drugs.

Al Mansouri said, Qatar’s preventive policies and programmes were given top priority to fortify the community, especially the youth, through education and awareness.

Through these policies, it has been proven that ignorance of the effects of drugs was a key cause of its spread.

He said that, the global drug problem still poses a serious threat to public health and safety, and human well-being, as well as, undermining pillars of sustainable development, political stability and democratic institutions.

He added that, it also threatens the national security of nations and the rule of law, adding that, under this assessment, illicit drug trafficking is a very serious crime with an emphasis on principle towards identification and

classification of crimes.

Al Mansouri expressed Qatar’s appreciation for the pivotal role of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and Commission on Narcotic Drugs
