The State of Qatar has renewed its commitment to the responsibility to protect in line with its belief in international cooperation to establish collective security and its respect for international law, and with its well-established policy to promote international peace and security.
This came in a statement made by HE Director of the International Organizations Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Yousef Sultan Larem at the virtual ministerial meeting on the responsibility to protect on the responsibility to protect and the role of women and girls in protection from atrocities. The event was organized on the 76th Session of the UN General Assembly in New York by Costa Rica, Croatia, and Denmark’s mission to the UN in cooperation with the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect.
The statement of the State of Qatar continued by saying the country continued its efforts to enhance the responsibility to protect as an active member and head of the partnership for a period of three years for the Group of Friends of the Responsibility to Protect.
As part of Qatar’s support for the role of women and girls in achieving peace, the statement said that the State of Qatar has consistently supported and implemented the women’s, peace and security agenda, based on its commitment to the principle of gender equality and the promotion of protection of women’s rights.
He also stressed that the State of Qatar has spared no effort to support the implementation of the United Nations Secretary-General’s strategy for gender parity, and has been keen to involve women in peace processes in which the State of Qatar plays a mediating role in.
He expressed Qatar’s conviction that the involvement of women contributes to the success of mediation processes, ensuring the rights of women and girls and the advancement of women and their active participation in society is an essential part of any agreements and activities related to peace and the rule of law.
In light of the importance of arming women, girls and young people with quality education, the statement drew attention to the leading role that the State of Qatar has played at the international level to provide education, especially in conflict areas and non-conflict societies.
He highlighted the State of Qatar’s commitment to provide quality education to one million girls by 2021, the announcement was made by HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani in 2018 in the Leaders’ Dialogue roundtable discussion.
The statement stressed the importance of engaging women and girls in all activities that help establish peace.
Concluding, the statement also stressed that the State of Qatar will continue working with its partners from the international community on preventing atrocities, and enhancing the principle of the responsibility to protect.
