Pilot Killed in Thai Airshow Crash

Bangkok, A fighter plane crashed into the ground and exploded Saturday morning during an airshow in Thailand, killing the pilot, local media reported.
The accident occurred at Hatyai air base in the southern Songkhla province during an airshow being held to mark the country’s National Children’s Day, the Thairath newspaper reported.
The JAS 39 Gripen fighter aircraft was recently purchased from Sweden, Pongsak Semachai, Royal Thai Air Force spokesman and air vice marshal, was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
The aviation unit will investigate the cause of the accident, Semachai said.
Hatyai airport was closed temporarily but is expected reopen before noon.
