Pakistan Detains Mumbai Attack Suspect Hafiz Saeed

Islamabad, Pakistani police have placed Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, the alleged mastermind of coordinated attacks on the Indian city of Mumbai in 2008 that killed more than 160 people, under house arrest in the eastern city of Lahore.

Saeed is under detention in the town of Lahore. Four other men – Abdullah Ubaid, Zafar Iqbal, Abdur Rehman Abid and Qazi Kashif Niaz – have also been placed under house arrest in other towns around Punjab, Dawn news reported.

Saeed was taken into custody at the headquarters for Jamaat-ud-Dawa, the religious charity he heads, late on Monday, a spokesman said.

Hafiz Saeed, who heads the Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) group and has a US$10 million US bounty on his head, is to be placed under preventative detention, according the order from the interior ministry.
