New Technologies to Be Used in Climate Change Conference for First Time

Doha, November 25 (QNA) – Deputy Director-General of (COP18/CMP8) organizing committee and head of ICT and call center department Hassan Mahdi al-Khalaf has revealed new technologies that will be used in the Climate Change Conference (COP18/CMP8) for first time, making Doha conference unique in the history of COP conferences.
 Speaking to Qatar News Agency (QNA) on the sidelines of the preparatory meetings for the 18th Climate Change Conference (COP18/CMP8), due to kick off in Doha tomorrow, al-Khalaf said that the technology used to organize the conference and to keep the public updated on the preparations occupies the highest importance.
 He noted that one of the leading adopted technologies is the “electronic visa system”, the first system of its kind, which will be available for the persons authorized to participate in the conference sessions. The visas will be issued to all delegations, observers and journalists who apply for the electronic visa system via the Conference internet system after being approved by the Special Committee of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
 Anyone can see the easy, effective and quick e-visa system on the website www.cop18.qa, he noted, adding that more than 7,000 people have applied for the electronic visas so far.
 Referring to the Paper Free System (PaperSmart), al-Khalaf said that the system is an environmental friendly initiative by the United Nations aiming at reducing the use of papers in its offices and conferences, noting that PaperSmart System will be adopted in the (COP18/CMP8) for the first time. 

As part of the conference commitment to host an inclusive and transparent conference, digital copies for the official documents of members of the civil society groups, and about 1,500 journalists participating in the conference, will be available for the first time, Deputy Director-General of (COP18/CMP8) organizing committee and head of ICT and call center department Hassan Mahdi al-Khalaf said.
 Referring to the Mobile Application, al-Khalaf said that it comes as part of efforts to make the (COP 18/CMP8) a hassle-free event. The  new mobile application will make a wide range of information about Qatar and the event available to the participants.
 Al-Khalaf noted that the application will contain comprehensive information on all measures, from the tables for free transportation service and the events that will be held on the sidelines of the conference, to the different news relating to the State of Qatar.
 The main sessions of the conference will have sophisticated technological facilities in addition to the internet services that will be available to the delegates and participants in each place at the Qatar National Convention Center, al-Khalaf added.
 Concluding, the Deputy Director-General of (COP18/CMP8) organizing committee and head of ICT and call center department Hassan Mahdi al-Khalaf said that the (COP18/CMP8) conference represents a great opportunity for the State of Qatar to show its numerous eco-friendly initiatives, which are applied in all fields and sectors, and a further example of the commitment of Qatar to engage in the international negotiations.
