National Guidelines for the management of Asthma in Primary Health care Launched

WAM Dubai, 20th Dec. 2013 (WAM) — Under the patronage of Health Policies Affairs and part of the national initiative developing Asthma clinics (HUBB- Helping UAE Breath Better), the Ministry of Health (MoH) has launched the first National Guidelines for the management of Asthma.

In her opening speech, Dr. Muna Al Kuwari, Director of Primary Health Care Department, stated that Asthma is a common condition which produces a significant workload for primary care centers, hospital outpatient clinics and inpatient admissions. The Department of PHC decided, therefore, to produce a comprehensive updated asthma guideline.

This guideline provides recommendations based on current evidence for best practice in the management of asthma in primary care. It makes recommendations on management of adults, and children with asthma.

This guideline will be of interest to healthcare professionals involved in the care of people with asthma. The target users could be also much broader than this, and include people with asthma, their parents/carers and those who interact with people with asthma outside of the ministry of health.

”Along with our endeavor to develop the guidelines, we started with two asthma clinics in Sharjah Medical District in 2012, increased to 5 in 2013. We will start another 5 during the year of 2014.” Parallel to that control of asthma cases improved from 56% in 2012 to 65% in 2013,” she added.

She expressed her thanks to all who participated to make this guidelines come to light, particularly GlaxoSmithKline, the pharmaceutical company, which was a partner to the department of PHC, MoH.
