Mohamed bin Zayed gives directives to purchase dates from farmers at Liwa Festival

WAM ABU DHABI, 22nd July, 2013 (WAM) — As part of an initiative to encourage farmers to enhance date production and to improve the care of palm plant palms, the organising committee of the Liwa Festival of Dates have been allocated AED 2 million to enable the purchase of produce at Liwa Festival on the directives of His Highness General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
Sheikh Mohamed presented 10,000 tissue palm seedlings as a gift to citizen farmers at Liwa Festival in its 9th session 2013, which is organized by the Management Committee of Festivals and Cultural and Heritage programmes in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
The tissue palm seedlings provided by Sheikh Mohamed have been produced from the finest varieties of dates in laboratories of the Studies and Research Unit of Palm and Dates affiliated to the University of the UAE.
The exhibitors praised the initiative of Sheikh Mohamed to encourage them to improve their farm production, pointing out that planting a palm tree in the UAE is considered a cornerstone in the conscience and history of the people of the region, in addition to what it represents in food security.
They emphasised that the wise leadership of the UAE has always been at the forefront in providing all aspects of support to farmers, especially palm planting and promotion, development and increased planting areas, and achieving self-sufficiency and diversification of income sources.
