Geneva, – The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) participated in the high-level meeting held recently at the conclusion of the conferences of the parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions in the Swiss capital, Geneva.

The Ministry also participated in the related round table activities in the presence of delegations from around the world.

The Ministry was represented in the meeting by Deputy Undersecretary for Environmental Affairs Eng. Ahmed Mohamed Al-Sada, .

The meeting discussed three main themes that featured the prospects to achieve the toxin-free future through the achievement of sustainable development goals 2030 and the opportunities to enhance the implementation of the three agreements through different partnerships , as well as opportunities to reduce pollution and hazardous waste while maintaining economic and social growth.

The meetings of States parties to the three conventions concluded here by agreement on a number of resolutions, including the inclusion of hazardous chemicals in both the Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions and the adoption of principles and guidelines in the Basel Convention.

The Rotterdam Convention relates to the application of the prior informed consent procedure for chemicals and pesticides in international trade to promote shared responsibility for the import of hazardous chemicals.

The Basel Convention deals with the control of transboundary movements of hazardous wastes and their disposal, while the Stockholm Convention aims to eliminate or limit the production and use of persistent organic pollutants.(QNA)
