Doha, – HE Minister of Transport and Communication Jassim bin Saif Al Sulaiti stressed Tuesday that the wise leadership of HH the Emir spares no effort in raising awareness of the needs of people with disability and stressed on the importance of benefiting from their ability.

His Excellency was speaking at the opening of the Gulf Region Education Assistive Technology Conference (GREAT) and said that the event confirms the commitment to improving the lives of people with special needs in all fields, through the use of technology. His Excellency added that the inclusion of people with disabilities in society would benefit the county in realizing Qatar National Vision 2030.

HE the Minister added that two examples of the countries’ commitment to this segment of society was last week’s launch of the national autism plan by HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al-Thani and the announcement made by the Ministry of Education and higher education regarding the setup of 52 schools from all stages for people with disabilities.

His Excellency noted that the Ministry of Transport and Communication has a number of strategies to help all segments of society, led by people with disabilities, and are helped with that by Mada Assistive Technology Center who have made a huge effort in helping people with disability live independently and gain equal access to education and work.

HE the Minister stressed on the importance of using assistive technology as the education process move away from traditional techniques. His Excellency added that there were a large amount of research which sow the positive impact the use of assistive technology has in both the short term and the long term. As a result, His Excellency added, the demand increases for building the entire ecosystem required for the technology to thrive.

The GREAT 2017 conference focuses on education practices in Inclusive Computer Technology and Assistive Technology (AT). It is organized by Mada, which was established by the Ministry of Transport and Communication. A host of experts in the field of assistive technology will take part in the conference to discuss the best practices and trends of the field.

CEO of Mada Maha Al Mansouri said that the center remains committed to supporting students with disabilities in Qatar, by providing mainstream education come the year 2018. She added that GREAT was a huge milestone as it “provides an ideal platform to further extend the necessary tools and knowledge needed to provide education and AT practices to those teaching PWD (persons with disabilities).” She added that the conference also reflected the commitment of to achieving the targets related to education. Al Mansouri noted that through the center’s cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, “MADA is able to gauge its educational operations to gain the furthest possible reach within Qatar.” For his part, Chief Executive of Qatar Rail (QR) Abdulla Abdulaziz Al Subaie said that the company catered for the needs of persons with disabilities in all its projects by employing the latest technology in the field.
