MIE-QU-CENG HOLDS THE 7TH QU ENGINEERING IN MEDICINE WORKSHOP: TRANSLATING AND COMMERCIALIZING BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH FROM LAB TO PRODUCTS

Qatar University College of Engineering (QU-CENG) Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) organized the 7th QU-Engineering in Medicine Workshop under the theme Translating and Commercializing Biomedical Research from Lab to Products, on 13 February 2023.

Attending the event were CENG Associate Dean for Research and Postgraduate Programs, Prof Ahmed Masoud, three keynote speakers: Prof Rayaz Malik, Assistant Dean for Clinical Investigations, WCM-Q and Consultant Endocrinology, HMC, Prof Sabu Thomas, Ex-Vice-Chancellor, Mahatma Gandhi University, India, and Prof Nureddin Ashammakhi, Associate Director, Center for Minimally Invasive Therapeutics (C-MIT), UCLA and MSU, USA. The event was attended by several distinguished speakers and attendees from different countries around the world. The main aim of the workshop was to bring together clinicians, scientists, engineers, and executives from various biomedical startup companies to share their experiences, recent advances, and ongoing activities in research and commercializing biomedical research products.

Dr Anwarul Hasan, Associate Professor at MIE-QU-CENG chaired the workshop. The distinguished speakers of the workshop included Dr Reza Tafreshi from Texas A&M University at Qatar, Dr Rashad Alfkey from HMC, Dr Arghya Paul from the Western University, Canada, Dr Mohammad Ghasemi Rad from Baylor College of Medicine, USA, Dr Gozde Durmus from Stanford University, USA, Prasanna Gore the CEO and co-founder of Syncell, USA, Nihal Engin Vrana the CEO and co-founder of Spartha Medical, France, and many speakers from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Oman, Turkey, Malaysia and beyond.

In his comment, the head of MIE, Professor Dr Saud Ghani said: “QU-MIE is delighted to have successfully arranged this event, which demonstrates that QU academics are pursuing high-quality multidisciplinary research and proving themselves to be at the forefront of their fields.”

Commenting on the workshop, Dr Anwarul Hasan said, “This workshop offered us a unique perspective from experts in machine learning, AI, nanomedicine, drug delivery, ultrasound, imaging, immunotherapy, and biomedical product development which will be helpful in multidisciplinary research to bring novel innovative lifesaving products to the market”.
