Japanese PM Arrives in Ukrainian Capital for Surprise Visit

Tokyo, March 21 (QNA) – Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida arrived Tuesday in Kyiv to voice support and solidarity with Ukraine in talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

According to the Japanese News Agency (Kyodo), the visit takes place the day after Kishida met with his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, in New Delhi and was kept a secret until just before arrival. However, a Japanese leader visiting a foreign country without prior announcement is a rare occurrence.

Japan’s Prime Minister is expected to discuss with Zelenskyy Japan’s support for the reconstruction of Ukraine, which has been under Russian attack since last year.

Despite Kishida’s desire to visit Ukraine as the chair of the upcoming G7 meeting, a Japanese government official had earlier stated that it would be challenging to arrange a trip there for security reasons.

The relations between Japan and Russia deteriorated as Tokyo joined other G7 members in imposing economic sanctions on Moscow over its war on Ukraine. (QNA)
