The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council has approved, in principle, the establishment of a Doha Flight Information Region (FIR) and Doha Search and Rescue Region (SRR) based on a proposal submitted by the State of Qatar. This proposal includes Qatar’s sovereign airspace and, in order to enhance the levels of safety and efficiency of the regional airspace, and other contiguous airspace over the high seas. That happened during the 223rd Session of the ICAO Council meetings that began on 18 June 2021.
The Council acknowledged the right of the State of Qatar to request the establishment of a Doha FIR/SRR over its sovereign territory and contiguous airspace, pursuant to Article 1 of the Chicago Convention and in accordance with Assembly Resolution A40-4, Appendix G.
