Germany, France worry about UK withdrawal from EU

BERLIN, June 15 (KUNA) — Germany and France on Wednesday warned the UK possible withdrawal from the European Union would lead to dire consequences and that such a step would be tantamount to serious setback to the Europeans’ unification efforts.
The joint official stance was expressed by France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault and his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier during a meeting, held near the German capital.
Steinmeier said in case the Britons voted in favor of the pullout at the public referendum due on June 23rd, the EU nations would be deeply frustrated due to the negative impact on the pan-European unity approach. He and his counterpart voiced hope that the British people would vote against the withdrawal.
The forecast referendum will be a critical crossroad for the European unity history. (end) anj.rk
