Berlin – German Chancellor Angela Merkel met here Saturday with Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko .

During the meeting, Merkel expressed her desire to start quickly new talks with the participation of Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany to end the crisis in Ukraine.

She said the new French President Emmanuel Macaron had expressed his willingness to work to resume the talks.

For his part, Poroshenko said he could not give up the agreements reached in the Belarusian capital Minsk and that he did not see any other alternative.

The Ukrainian government forces have been fighting since 2014 in the east of the country, against separatists believed to receive secret military aid from Russia.
