GEF Hopes COP 18 Would Reach Radical Solutions to Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Doha, November 29 (QNA) – The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has urged participants at the United Nations 18th Conference on Climate Change in Doha ( COP 18) to exert strenuous efforts and show flexibility in the talks aimed at reaching practical mechanisms and radical solutions to the phenomenon of greenhouse gas emissions. It noted at the same time the importance of the role of the facility in the area of technology transfer and clean development mechanisms for both institutions and individuals and assistance of the convention’s parties to meet their obligations.
This came during a workshop held this evening at Qatar National Convention Centre where the conference is being held. It dealt with the Facility’s projects, foremost of which being the Green Fund project, as well as investments it provides to developing countries to fight climate change.
The workshop also  focused on the important role of the media in environmental awareness and dissemination of concepts that enhance the human role in protecting the environment, as well as the need to apply the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) in developing countries to reduce the temperature rise caused by climate change.
Speaking at the workshop, GEF President Robert de Cera considered the United Nations 18th Conference on Climate Change in Doha as a march of progress towards the limitation of climate change and greenhouse gas emissions, referring in this respect to  the importance of finding practical solutions to this phenomenon during the conference.
He stressed that many of the concerns of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) are in first place for the benefit of developing countries, noting that the facility cares for environmental programmes in order to reach  eco-friendly mechanisms in various countries of the world, especially  poorer ones.(QNA)
