Foreign Minister: We respect international legitimacy decisions without prejudice to our inalienable historical rights

Manama, Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani said that Bahrain respects the legitimate decisions and the ruling of the International Court of Justice without prejudice to the historical and legal rights of the Kingdom, based on the principle of uti possidetis juris, and in accordance with Legislative Decree No. 8 of 1993 on the Territorial Sea and Contiguous Zone of Bahrain.

In response to a question by Member of the Council of Representatives Mohammed Al Sisi Al Buainain about the information published in the French magazine “Le Point” by Ian Hampel on November 3, 2021, regarding the ruling issued by the International Court of Justice, Al Zayani said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is following up on the stated legal arguments and evidence in line with the principles of international law and that are under careful research and study.

He added that Bahrain stresses the importance of resolving border disputes between the member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) through peaceful means.

The Kingdom has on several occasions announced its readiness to start bilateral talks with the State of Qatar based on Al Ula GCC Summit communique to address all pending issues and matters, Al Zayani said.
