FNC partakes in International Day of Democracy celebrations

WAM ABU DHABI, September 14th, 2013 (WAM) — The Federal National Council (FNC) will mark the celebrations of the International Day of Democracy, which coincides with 15th of September.

In a statement, the FNC expressed its pride with the gradual political empowerment and participation outlined by the wise leadership in order to enhance the parliamentary work, thanks to the political programme of the President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

It also added that Sheikh Khalifa’s approach aims to boost the democratic course of the FNC since the foundation of the Union over four decades ago.

The statement noted that the participation of the FNC in observing the international Day of Democracy is a consolidation to the leading role played by the FNC through discharging its powers and constitutional authorities.

In 2007 the United Nations General Assembly resolved to observe 15 September as the International Day of Democracy with the purpose of promoting and upholding the principles of democracy and invited all member states and organizations to commemorate the day in an appropriate manner that contributes to raising public awareness.

The preamble of the resolution affirmed that: ” While democracies share common features, there is no single model of democracy and that democracy does not belong to any country or region. Democracy is a universal value based on the freely-expressed will of people to determine their own political, economic, social and cultural systems, and their full participation in all aspects of life.” WAM/HH/MN
