Deputy Prime Minister Holds Number of Meetings on Sidelines of Peace Signing

Doha, HE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defense Affairs held today a number of meetings on the sidelines of a signing ceremony for a peace deal between the Sudanese government and Sudan Liberation Army/ Movement (SLA/M) the Second Revolution.

The Deputy Prime Minister met with head of the movement Abu Al Qasim Imam Haj and his accompanying delegation. The latter praised the role of Qatar in establishing peace in Darfur, as well as the developmental projects many of Darfur’s states are seeing. For his part, Al Mahmoud said that today’s signing, which is based on the Doha Document, will be a huge boost for peace in Darfur.

Al Mahmoud also met with leader of Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) Bakhit Abdallah Abdel Karim (Dabajo). They reviewed the progress of peace in Darfur and the role of JEM in enhancing the principles laid forth in the Doha Document for Peace.

The Deputy Prime Minister met as well with Jeremiah Kingsley Mamabolo Acting, who is the Joint Special Representative for Darfur and Head of the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID). They also discussed the progress of peace in Darfur, in light of the recent number of armed groups joining the Doha Document for Peace.

The final meeting was with Commissioner of the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) Salah al Tayeb Awad, with Chairman of Darfur peace follow-up office Magdi Khalaf Allah attending as well. Sudan’s Ambassador in Doha Hussain Mohammed Hussain Mosa was also present. The discussed the efforts of the commission. Awad expressed his thanks to the State of Qatar for their cooperation.

A number of officials from the cabinet’s general-secretariat attended those meetings.
