Doha, – “Conference EU/GCC Integration – A Comparative Approach” , a conference comparing between the integration process in the European Union and the integration process in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), was held Tuesday in Doha.

A number ambassadors of the member states of the European Union in Doha participated in the conference which was organized by the Doha Institute For Graduate Studies to mark the Europe Day.

The Conference discussed the efforts of integration among the GCC countries, and compared them with integration process in the countries of the European Union, taking into account the specificity of countries in both organizations.

Director of Qatar University’s Gulf Studies Center Abdullah Baabood gave a historical presentation on the establishment of the Gulf Cooperation Council, pointing to the importance of this bloc to the countries of the region.

He compared between the GCC integration efforts and those in the EU in addition to the lessons that the GCC can learn from the European experience.

He pointed out that, to the Gulf region, Europe is the closest economic, technological and scientific region, and that the stability of the Middle East is important for both of them and for the development of trade, stability and economy.

Ambassador of the European Union to Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Saudi Arabia Michele Cervone D’urso said commenting on the security coordination between the GCC States that coordination is going well with regard to the regional challenges that these countries face.

He said that the economic aspect requires a lot of necessary work, including achieving the unified Gulf currency and other complementary initiatives. He called on the GCC countries to benefit from the experience of the European Union in the integration achieved over the past decades such as the achievement of the common market and foreign policy. He stress the importance of cooperation between the two regional organizations, especially in the economic field.

Director of European External Action Service (EEAS) in the Middle East and North Africa Nick Westcott spoke about the achievements of the European Union in realizing peace and stability, which came as a result of the structure of the Union, that allows countries to join or withdraw according to their wishes in accordance to terms and considerations on the countries to abide by. He stressed the success of the European Union in removing borders between countries, which reduced the causes of conflict between them. (QNA)
