Baku, Tehran mull joint fight against smuggling, trans-border crime

Iranian delegation led by Commander of Iran’s Border Troops, Major General Gasim Rzai has visited Azerbaijan.

The Iranian delegation’s visit to Azerbaijan started on August 17 on the invitation of Chief of the State Border Service, Commander of the Border Troops, Colonel General Elchin Guliyev, AzerTag news agency reported.

During the meeting between Iranian and Azerbaijani delegations, the sides exchanged views on the situation in the border-crossing stations, as well as discussed the prospects of cooperation between the two bodies.

They stressed the importance of expanding cooperation in the sphere of prevention smuggling, trans-border crime and other illegal activities.

During the meeting, Iranian Commander Rzai invited Guliyev to visit Iran. Guliyev has accepted the invitation of his counterpart.

The Iranian delegation will take part at a ceremony on the 95th anniversary of Azerbaijan’s Border Service on August 18.

Azerbaijan and Iran have had diplomatic relations since 1918. Iran recognized Azerbaijan’s independence in 1991, and diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1992.
